Mimi Gedamu, a candidate for Maryland House of Delegates District 37B, will host a community forum at the Salisbury Area Chamber of Commerce on Tuesday, March 27, at 5:30 p.m. to discuss House Bill 1302, commonly known as the Red Flag bill.
HB 1302 authorizes any individual to petition the courts or law enforcement for what is referred to as an “extreme risk prevention order” based on the petitioner's claim the person is “an immediate and present danger of causing personal injury.” If the petitioner compiles enough evidence, the bill authorizes the court to issue an extreme risk prevention order that requires the accused to immediately surrender any gun or guns during the duration of a process that may take up to a year.
The bill passed in the Maryland House of Delegates amid multiple gun control bills with a nearly unanimous support of House Democrats and Republicans.
